About our Carpets

Tibetan carpet hand knottingAll of our carpets are traditionally hand knotted by highly skilled Tibetan carpet weavers on traditional vertical looms. These skills have been handed down for generations and the process of making a Tibetan carpet is completed by entirely by hand.

Our carpets can be woven in any shape or size and with any colours or designs desired by our clients. We invite our customers to customise or create their own rug designs and personalise their orders to suit their individual tastes.

Note: The price of a customised rug is the same price per square meter as one of our rugs in stock. There are no additional costs for personalising your rug. Information on how to order a rug or customise your design is available from Rugs you can order

Our rugs are made by Tibetan refugees living in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal. The entire proceeds from the purchase of our carpets go directly to the social welfare activities of the Tibetan community. Theses proceeds provide many refugee families with employment, health care, schools, and housing. The Tibetan community nominate the price of their carpets in $US currency and receive their asking price in full. Our primary aim is to provide direct financial assistance to the Tibetan refugee community. Visit About Us for more information.

Tibetan sheepOur Carpets

Dense plush wool is sheared from Tibetan sheep grazing in high altitudes on the Tibetan plateau. The raw wool is manually sorted and combed to remove any impurities. The wool is manually spun into a fine, high quality yarn. Rug designs are drawn and painted by Tibetan graph artists and the templates are forwarded to the weavers to create the rug. It can take between two to four months to weave a rug depending upon its size.

The quality of our Carpets

Our carpets are woven in three categories: 100 knots, 80 knots and 60 knots. This means that there are 100 knots per square inch (of rug) in a 100 knots carpet and respectively 80 and 60 knots per square inch in an 80 and 60 knot carpet. It can take a skilled carpet weaver (on average) 30 days to weave one square meter of a 100 knots rug and 20 days to weave one square meter of a 60 knot rug. Therefore, the higher the knots count per square inch of carpet, the higher the quality of the carpet.

Wool percentages in our carpets

  • 100 knot rugs are made from 100% pure Tibetan sheep wool.
  • 80 knot rugs are made from 80% pure Tibetan sheep wool and 20% New Zealand sheep wool.
  • 60 knot rugs are made from 70% pure Tibetan sheep wool and 30% New Zealand sheep wool.

Our carpet dyes are either natural vegetable or the highest quality environmentally friendly Swiss dyes. The Swiss dyes are resistant to fading and the rugs can be steam cleaned or washed with water based solutions. The Swiss dyes provide a spectrum of over 175 different colours.

The wool

Our carpets are woven from pure Tibetan Sheep Wool imported from Tibet and New Zealand sheep wool. Both types of wool are pure and natural. Tibetan sheep wool is famed for its warmth, sheen and strength and New Zealand wool for its shine and glow.

Tibetan sheepTibetan sheep wool

Tibetan sheep are reared on the vast pastoral lands of the Tibetan plateau by Nomads at altitudes reaching 17,000 feet above sea level. Tibetan highland sheep can only survive in high altitudes and produce a distinctive thick fleece that has long staple, high tensile strength and is highly rich in lanolin and natural wool wax.

These natural preservatives make Tibetan Rugs very durable and long lasting while naturally enhancing the colours and dyes with age.

The high lanolin content provides a smooth, silky sheen while keeping the wool soft and supple. It acts as a natural anti-staining agent and the long fibres allow the dyes to permeate deeply thus preventing the rug from fading.

The wool is characteristically hard-wearing, strong and vibrant making it the finest natural fibre in the world for rug weaving. Rugs made from Tibetan sheep wool mature beautifully over time and last for generations.

The Styles of our Carpets

Our rugs are available in Traditional Tibetan designs, Contemporary Modern and Semi Traditional styles. Certain rugs contain percentages of silk blended with 100% pure Tibetan sheep wool. The composition ratios range from 10% to 40% silk.

Traditional Rug DesignTraditional Rug designs resemble the cultural and religious way of life for the Tibetan people. Each rug portrays a cultural story told in an ancient language of symbolism. Floral and animal imagery also appear in traditional Tibetan rugs.

Each symbol has a traditional meaning intended to bring prosperity, good luck, long life, protection, and spiritual well-being to their owner.

The symbolic meanings of our rugs are explained when your browse our traditional rug collection and web site.

Modern Rug DesignModern or contemporary styled rugs use a wide spectrum of modern and fashionable designs and colours.

Modern styled rugs do not incorporate the use of traditional symbolic imagery and designs.

Semi-traditional Rug DesignSemi traditional styled rugs incorporate a combination of traditional and modern rug designs and patterns. Semi traditional rugs often portray traditional borders and corner imagery.
